As in any season in Northern NJ, your face and hands are exposed to the majority of the harsh winter winds and glaring sun. Fluctuations in moisture outside and dry air inside can leave your skin looking extremely dry.
These twenty tips will guide you in protecting your face and hands from the ravages of winter.
Protect the thin skin beneath your eyes from harsh winter glare by wearing sunglasses that cover the area.
Eyes
Use a light facial moisturizer with SPF under your eyes before applying cosmetics.
When you go to bed at night, apply a moisturizing cream specially designed for the eye area after removing your makeup.
If you wake up with puffiness from winter congestion and colds, gently dab a cooling gel under your eyes to shrink the tissue.
Lips
Lips are one of the most neglected parts of a woman’s body when it comes to skin care. But a plump and pouting kisser can make a woman look years younger, since collagen is lost with age, causing lips to thin out.
The first step to plumping up your lips is the most important, not just for your lips, but for the hydration of your entire body. Drink plenty of water it will make your skin glow lips less prone to dryness, cracking, chapping, and wrinkling, even before you apply external treatments.
Gently exfoliate dry skin from your lips using a commercial lip exfoliate, a gentle facial scrub, or a dry soft-bristled toothbrush.
Use a collagen-based moisturizing lip treatment as a base for your lipstick. Purchase lipstick and other lip products with SPF 15 or higher and that are specifically designed to add moisture to your lips. Reapply the product containing SPF throughout the day.
Be sure to remove all cosmetics on and around your mouth before you go to bed to prevent blemishes. Use a night cream around your mouth and petroleum jelly or a lip treatment product on your lips to soften them while you sleep.
Face
Sure eyes and lips are part of your face, but the way you care for them is a little different than the rest of your face.
Cleanse your face at night and each morning with a mild cleanser or foaming face wash for dry or combination skin. If your sebaceous glands work overtime even in the winter, choose an oil-free product. For ultra deep cleaning and toning, use a kelp mask.
Always use sunscreen or a moisturizing facial lotion that contains at least SPF 15.
When choosing a facial product with vitamins or minerals in it to get you through this season, consider your purpose for the product. As you probably know Vitamin C as well as many products with citrus oil or ingredients, works to brighten the appearance of your skin glow. Vitamin E fights free radical damage by supplying your skin with much-needed antioxidants. Vitamin A puts the breaks on collagen loss and thus slows down the loss of skin elasticity. Calcium applied to the skin rejuvenates its appearance by helping to hydrate it.
For ultra-deep hydration at night, you might try a serum.
Hands
It has been said that you can tell a woman’s true age by her hands. Fool even the most observant onlookers by taking extra care of your hardworking hands.
Nurture your nails and cells from the inside by taking folic acid, magnesium, and calcium supplements. Nails that flake or have ridges shout out that you are aging and these supplements will help strengthen your nails.
Exfoliate the skin on your hands using a sugar scrub or a cream with an exfoliating ingredient. Products containing alpha-hydroxyl acids (AHAs) or retinoid aid in exfoliation. They also draw hydration into your skin cells, making the renewal process, and may even thicken your epidermis.
Protect your hands with sunscreen. Winter rays are just as damaging to your skin as the summer sun. Check the ingredients to make sure that the sun protection product you choose contains either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. If you don’t like the feel of sunscreen, combine it with your lotion in the palm of your hand for smoother application.
Use moisture-rich hand soap. Antibacterial formulas and body soap are harsh on your skin and can be extremely drying.
Re-apply sunscreen and lotion to your hands after you wash them. Or find a hand lotion with SPF protection factor in it for one-step ease.
Once or twice a week, either use a thick hand cream overnight, or coat your hands in a petrolatum-based product (Yes, even standard petroleum jelly will do.) and slip on some light cotton gloves. Your hands are silken by the time you wake up.
Now you can get cozy inside and be soft and silky up close, or hit the town knowing that the world’s first view of you is a beautiful one.
